Since we first conceptualized Native Nomads, a multimedia platform for documenting our travels, one of our most important missions was creating a platform, a SPACE, to share the stories of people we met along the journey.
Living here in the Yucatan, we are reminded constantly of the land we dwell on. The land belongs to the Maya, the Indigenous, Prehispanic people who have had a close relationship with this land and south toward Belize, Chiapas, and Guatemala for many millennia.
Being half Navajo Native myself, part of my purpose in life has been to join in solidarity with indigenous people and to cultivate my connection and wisdom through my roots. Growing up in the United States, I was all too aware of the historical trauma, oppression, resilience, and spiritual lessons that BIPOC folks had faced and could teach me. People historically relegated to the margins of society, their voices silenced or stifled – I’ve felt it is important to do my part to amplify those voices and share them with the world.
So this page was born! We have begun reaching out to our BIPOC friends asking for any written or video pieces they feel compelled to share. With protests happening all across the world over the tragic murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery in the United States, this has been an especially pivotal, potent time. It is time to fight for justice and true equality for Black people. For marginalized people. I have seen an outpouring of solidarity. I have seen a desire for honest, personal reflection to unlearn the ways of systemic racism that most of us have been indoctrinated in some shape or form. Family, friends, and strangers across all continents are coming together to be the change they want to see in the world.
I believe this is a collective calling to step out of the shadow of silence and shine the light of truth on our world no matter how ugly it may be. I believe this is our collective opportunity to really listen and learn from the stories of people who have been marginalized for far too long.
This is that calling felt deep in my soul being put into action. This page is dedicated to AMPLIFYING the voices of our BIPOC brothers and sisters, through the medium of guest writing, filmmaking, art, performance, and more.
Please check out their amazing, powerful, and talented work!
