For our 9th wedding anniversary back in 2021, we couldn’t have chosen a more magical place than Bacalar, a hidden gem in the Yucatan Peninsula known for its stunning Laguna Bacalar, also called the Lake of Seven Shades of Blue. This trip was a beautiful blend of adventure, relaxation, and celebrating our love for one another. From kayaking to Los Rapidos to enjoying an unforgettable meal at Nixtamal (Cocina a Fuego y Ceniza), every moment was filled with excitement, natural beauty, and cherished memories.

A Rainy Start to a Special Adventure

Our Bacalar anniversary celebration began with a bit of unexpected weather. Shortly after arriving, a downpour greeted us, but instead of dampening our spirits, it only added to the magic of the moment. We laughed and embraced the warm rain as it poured over the lagoon, contrasting with the cool, crisp air. The next morning, the skies cleared, giving us the perfect day to continue our adventure.

Kayaking Adventure to Los Rapidos

For a special anniversary experience, we decided to head out to Los Rapidos for a kayaking adventure. Instead of taking the more common route, we chose a lesser-known entry point to this narrow part of the lagoon, which offered a quieter, more intimate setting—perfect for an anniversary celebration.

We drove to the nearby Restaurant La Laguna and rented kayaks for a very reasonable price. Then we paddled through the serene, crystal-clear waters of Bacalar, surrounded by nothing but nature.

The lagoon, as always, was breathtaking, with its vibrant shades of blue, shifting between turquoise and deep sapphire as we paddled. The seclusion was just what we wanted—a peaceful escape, with only the occasional call of a bird to remind us that we weren’t entirely alone.

The Beauty of Los Rapidos

As we reached Los Rapidos, we were met with the stunning beauty of the area. Known for its crystal-clear waters and unique stromatolites (ancient living rock formations), Los Rapidos is a must-visit for anyone coming to Bacalar. Kayaking through this natural wonder felt like we were paddling through time, the stromatolites creating a surreal and almost otherworldly landscape along the shore.

The water at Los Rapidos moves faster than other parts of the lagoon, which made paddling both a challenge and a thrill. The effort of going upstream was worth it for the exhilarating ride back downstream. We couldn’t help but marvel at the striking blue hues that surrounded us, feeling both a sense of peace and exhilaration at the same time.

Relaxing at Los Rapidos: A Perfect Spot to Unwind and Float

Before making our way back downstream, we took a relaxing break at the Los Rapidos (restaurant), enjoying a refreshing drink and a swim in the crystal-clear waters that surrounded the cool hangout spots. Conveniently, we were able to store our kayaks in a small natural inlet right by the restaurant, making it easy to pause and soak in the moment.

What makes Los Rapidos truly special is the variety of inviting spaces to unwind. Whether you prefer lounging in a hammock gently swaying over the water, sitting on rustic wooden seats along the water’s edge, or simply floating in the peaceful lagoon, there’s a perfect spot for everyone. One of the highlights of this spot is the natural water flow that feels more like a river than a lake, offering a fun way to float downstream. You can walk to the far end of the park, where the current will carry you gently down the channel, allowing you to drift effortlessly with the water. Once you reach the other side, it’s easy to step out and walk back to the starting point, ready to float again—no kayaks needed.

This leisurely floating experience is a wonderful way to enjoy Los Rapidos without the need for renting any equipment, and the added option of life vests makes it especially family-friendly, offering peace of mind for those visiting with children. It’s an idyllic way to spend the day immersed in nature’s beauty, whether you’re seeking adventure or simply relaxation.

Respecting Nature’s Wonders

We were mindful of our surroundings, especially the stromatolites, which play a vital role in keeping Bacalar’s waters clear and vibrant. Avoiding stepping on these fragile formations, we respected the natural environment, knowing that this beautiful ecosystem needs our protection to remain the paradise that it is.

A Romantic Anniversary Dinner at Nixtamal (Cocina a Fuego y Ceniza)

After a day of kayaking and exploring Bacalar’s natural beauty, we were ready to indulge in a special anniversary dinner at one of our favorite restaurants, Nixtamal (Cocina a Fuego y Ceniza). The ambiance at Nixtamal is enchanting, filled with the scent of incense and the soft glow of firelight—an ideal setting for our romantic evening.

Cassie ordered the tuna, and I chose salmon crusted with chocolate, a delightful surprise that blended unique flavors perfectly. The presentation of the food was as beautiful as the taste, and a cute little mushroom stuffed with cheese, blueberries, and cherry tomatoes stood out as a memorable highlight. The name “the kitchen of fire and ash” is fitting, with the entire dining experience elevated by the smoky aromas filling the air.

As a sweet surprise, the staff celebrated our anniversary with a special dessert—a beautiful concoction of passion fruit, chocolate, avocado sauce, and coconut oil, garnished with charcoal. It was a sweet ending to a perfect meal and an unforgettable anniversary celebration.

Fun and Games in Bacalar

Our night didn’t end with just dinner. Afterward, we added a playful twist to the evening with a game of ping pong at the restaurant. It was a lighthearted and fun way to close out our special day. It’s little moments like these that make Bacalar such a special place, where the unexpected is always around the corner, adding joy to every experience.

Reconnecting with an Old Friend

Bacalar has not only given us stunning landscapes and unforgettable meals, but it also reconnected us with old friends. During our stay, we ran into our friend Mehdi, a tour in Tulum, Mexico, who had been instrumental during our first visit to the Yucatan Peninsula back in 2017. Seeing him again brought back memories of floating in a centuries old canal made by the Mayan, through mangroves in Sian Kaan near Tulum on one of his group tours. It was a moment that initially sparked our deep love for Mexico. Our reunion with Mehdi reminded us of how the people we meet during our travels shape our experiences just as much as the places we visit.

A Cozy Breakfast Spot

The following morning, we continued our anniversary celebrations with a cozy breakfast at Madre Masa, a charming bakery and cafe. Known for its incredible pastries and coffee, Madre Masa didn’t disappoint. Cassie enjoyed a latte with almond milk, and I savored a tea infusion with chiliquiles and scrambled eggs. The attention to detail in their homemade baked goods made for a delightful start to the day.

Exploring Bacalar’s Private Beaches

We spent the rest of the day at a private beach club, where the waters were recovering from the effects of a hurricane the previous year. Yet, the beauty of the lagoon remained undeniable. The subtle hints of turquoise and blue were still inviting, and we spent the afternoon swimming, soaking in the peaceful surroundings, and reflecting on our beautiful anniversary.

Capturing Memories and Embracing the Unexpected

One of the most thoughtful gifts we received during this trip was a floaty wristband for our GoPro from our friend Olivia. It reminded us of all the incredible memories we’ve captured over the years—swimming with whale sharks near Holbox, gliding alongside thousands of manta rays in Puerto Escondido, and discovering hidden cenotes. Bacalar and this anniversary trip were yet another chapter in our story, filled with beauty, adventure, and love.

We ended our beautiful trip enjoying the sunset over the lake of 7 shades of blue, eating ice cream and watching as the sky exploded on fire and showed off for us. We even saw a double rainbow before the day was over!

Our ninth wedding anniversary in Bacalar was more than just a celebration of our love—it was an adventure filled with unforgettable experiences. From the thrilling kayaking trip to Los Rapidos to our romantic dinner at Nixtamal, Bacalar offered us the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation, and connection. This trip reaffirmed why Bacalar holds such a special place in our hearts, and we look forward to many more anniversaries and adventures in this magical corner of Mexico.
