ESCAPE THE HEAT
After visiting the Mayan Ruins of Palenque, the heat and humidity of the dense jungle forest was making us crave some refreshing waters. We had heard of the well known Agua Azul waterfalls outside of Palenque, but we were told that because of their popularity they are often overcrowded. So our hosts suggested we check out the smaller, and in their opinion, more beautiful Roberto Barrios Waterfalls.
So we hopped in the car and drove south about 50 minutes, through many back country, twisty roads with our friends Jill and Chris of Artistic Voyages. The views along the drive are epic and rustic as you soak in all of the pristine nature.
OFF THE BEATEN PATH
Along the journey to the waterfalls we were stopped on the small country highway by a few of the locals – most of them were very young. They were asking us to pay a small fine (40 pesos) before we could pass. We paid and exchanged a few smiles before we were back on our way.
We entered the town right next to the waterfalls, which was small and cute. There was parking in a large grassy lot. We grabbed our things and walked into the site, crossing several local food and fruit smoothie stands before entering the trail to the falls.
DEEP IN NATURE
Black howler and spider monkeys played above us overhead in the jungle canopy as we hiked down toward the waterfalls. Many others were there, mostly Mexican families enjoying each other over picnics at little spots dotting the river and falls. We hiked down quite aways until we found a few rocks to set down our bags.
AMAZING WATERFALLS
Exploring the area, we noticed that it was quite easy to walk up and down the sides of the waterfalls. The rocky edges of the falls were covered in lichen acting like little suction cups against our feet! Instead of the sides being slippery they were grippy and made it easy to climb back up after jumping or sliding into pools below you.
DO AS THE LOCALS DO
The next waterfall was even bigger and we did as the locals did! We slid down the tall natural slide into the giant pool below it. It was entirely too much fun. We spent the rest of the afternoon taking advantage of the sun rays and playing in the falls and pools around us.
BLOWN AWAY
We have heard that the Agua Azul Waterfalls nearby are equally amazing. They are certainly the most popular waterfalls in the area.
However, we were absolutely blown away by the beauty and magic of the Roberto Barrios Waterfalls. We couldn’t recommend them enough! If you are looking for a hidden gem that is off the beaten path, with less crowds, this is your best bet. Roberto Barrios Waterfalls is a wonderful place where you can cool off after visiting the hot and humid Mayan ruins of Palenque.
Also, let us know if you go to both Agua Azuls and Roberto Barrios waterfalls, and which one you prefer. We know you will enjoy your experience there!
I use to do surgical medical missions when Palenque was still undiscovered by tourists. I loved the area then, no bars, no fast food chains, etc
Agua Azule was one of my favorite places!
Wow that sounds like such a great experience. We’ve read some books of people going in the 70’s and it just seemed so surreal and as you said, undiscovered. Even though it is much more touristy now, we still loved it. The waterfalls around the area are such a wonderful bonus as well!
